How many words should a Common App essay be? ▼
The Common Application personal statement has a hard limit of 650 words and a minimum requirement of 250 words. While you can submit anything in this range, admissions officers recommend writing between 500 and 620 words to make your statement thorough yet concise.
Does UCAS count spaces and line counts? ▼
Yes, UCAS is very strict. The personal statement limit is exactly 4,000 characters including spaces. In addition, the UCAS online application system imposes a 47-line limit. What Flesch readability level is best for essays? ▼
For high school seniors drafting college application essays, a Flesch-Kincaid grade level between Grade 8 and Grade 10 is ideal. Writing should be conversational, expressive, and clear. Avoid overly dense academic vocabulary which can sound artificial.
